The FI/RE movement is spreading. Not only is the online money community growing, but mainstream media is starting to cover the concepts of both financial independence and early retirement more frequently. Another big first in the FI/RE movement is Playing with FIRE, the first feature-length documentary of its kind.
Whether you are just starting to try on the label of money nerd or you’re well on your way toward FI/RE yourself, both Playing with FIRE and FinCon pack plenty of inspiration. Here’s a peek at how the documentary and the one-of-a-kind event for money nerds have come together in the past and how they’re going to do it again at #FinCon19.
Watch the Trailer for Playing with FIRE
The trailer for Playing with FIRE doesn’t mince words. In fact, it comes right out and shares the jarring truth about Americans and our finances. Most of us have less than $1,000 in savings, while some of us having nothing.
How did we get here and how do we change that? The trailer promises to chronicle the journey of Scott and Taylor Rieckens, who are determined to chart an alternate course. Inspired by the FI/RE movement and thought leaders like Mr. Money Mustache, the Rieckens set out on a year long journey to see just what FI/RE is all about.
The star-studded trailer pulls wisdom from Mr. Money Mustache, The Minimalists, Vicki Robin, and many others, who hint at the broader message behind the documentary: this isn’t just a math problem. It’s looking at the psychology behind the numbers of early retirement and exploring the consumerism of our society and the spending that goes along with it.
How to Watch the Full FI/RE Documentary: Playing with FIRE
Right now, Playing with FIRE is available to the people who backed the film on Kickstarter last fall. To say that the personal finance community is anxiously awaiting its larger release is a huge understatement. In fact, some people have taken it upon themselves to organize early viewing parties.
Early Viewing Parties for Playing with FIRE
It should come as no surprise that the FI/RE community–and personal finance in general–is coming together to embrace the first documentary of its kind. The community is incredibly diverse and people can certainly have strong opinions. However, the community is also incredibly welcoming and supportive. Watching the subculture play out in a more mainstream way through this documentary is generating a lot of excitement.
Several meetups have already been organized to watch the film. A group of personal finance and FI bloggers in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul area who call themselves the North Stars knew that they wanted to host a viewing party. Krystel from All She Saves orchestrated the event, saying, it was the “perfect opportunity to rally everyone together to support those we knew in the film and see how the community was going to be portrayed to a larger public audience.” Mr. AE from Apathy Ends adds that this has been in the works since #FinCon18 because “we wanted to plan a meetup around the documentary so we could watch it with like-minded people.”
Fans in the FI/RE Community
Gwen, the blogger behind Fiery Millennials and co-host of FIRE Drill Podcast, actually traveled to the official premiere in Longmont, Colorado, earlier this April. She sees the entire money community benefiting from the film when it’s released. Gwen recognizes the film’s importance. She also had a hunch it would be excellent, so she says she “made it a priority to attend as the crew spent a lot of time and effort on the film.”
Though Josh Overmyer wasn’t in Colorado for the premiere, he celebrated virtually with the FI/RE community. He’s actually seen the film a handful of times now. Josh says he appreciated a different aspect of the film each time. “As an early backer of the film, the first time I watched it was just to see and appreciate the culmination of a year and a half effort. Then I really started watching it to see so many of my FI friends in the film. As I watched it a 3rd and 4th time, I really focused on the emotions that Taylor was going through. Especially poignant was the scene in her new-to-her Honda CRV, acknowledging so much sacrifice but it was too soon to see the fruits of her choices,” he shares.
Future Access to Playing with FIRE
Playing with FIRE is slated for a broader release soon. For the most up-to-date information, join the mailing list or follow them on social media, including Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. If you really can’t wait to learn more, you can grab your copy of the Playing with FIRE book now.
FinCon and Playing with FIRE
FI/RE is catching–there’s no doubt about that. And FinCon is playing a part in helping like-minded individuals come together to share their visions and their progress. Philip “PT” Taylor, the creator of FinCon and PT Money, shared that FinCon has become a default FI/RE event. He says many members of the FI/RE community are looking for a place to come together on a larger scale. Of course, Camp Mustache, Camp FI, and many of the local meetups and communities are essential at spreading the FIRE movement and fostering community locally, but the size of FinCon events is something that is different from many other FIRE events.
If you are someone who is interested in learning more about FI, you’re already on the road to FI/RE, or you are simply a personal finance enthusiast, FinCon is absolutely for you. It isn’t an exclusive event for content creators only. At this point, hundreds of non-creators are signing up to attend these events to be part of the money scene. PT says that #FinCon19 can serve as a centralized place for FI/RE people to gather and that FinCon will always welcome anyone and everyone who is enthusiastic about the idea of bettering their finances. After all, a money nerd is a money nerd.

Playing with FIRE at #FinCon19
There’s also something special in store for anyone who is a fan of Playing with FIRE. Anyone who has already seen the film might recognize some of the scenes from #FinCon18. You might have even had the chance to attend the discussion with the cast and crew last year. (Catch it here if you missed it!)
In addition to being a location for some of the filming of the documentary, #FinCon18 also released the official movie trailer and included a special behind-the-scenes session. This year, PT says that there are plans to share the full-length film. It only makes sense because FinCon was honored to be featured in the film and wants to continue supporting it. PT says that supporting the filming, marketing, and now showcasing of the film completes the circle of support.
Come to #FinCon19 to Meet the FI/RE Community
Maybe you’re not a content creator, but you’re still a big money nerd. You love spreadsheets and you have serious money goals. If that sounds like you, then don’t miss #FinCon19. You can grab a Community Pass for a special non-advertised price by applying on the FinCon landing page here. At this year’s FinCon, community members can see live podcasts and attend personal finance and FI/RE sessions. Many of the people who supported Playing with FIRE are eager to come to #FinCon19.
Gwen plans to attend as both a content creator and a member of the FI/RE community. She says, “I consider myself a member of both spaces as a blogger and podcaster talking about FI/RE. I like talking to other bloggers to get tips and tricks, but I also love talking to and helping people optimize their finances and reduce their dependence on necessary work!”
Krystel says she’s still in the early stages of pursuing FI or FI/RE. That means she is more focused on paying down her loans and building alternative incomes sources. Still, she is excited for #FinCon19 as well.
No matter where you are on your journey toward financial independence or FI/RE, there’s something for you in the Playing with FIRE documentary and there’s space for you in the FinCon community.
