Minneapolis Bloggers Show Up In Force For a Great First FinCon Local Meetup
This is a post from Pete of BibleMoneyMatters.com. Pete is the FinCon Local leader in the Minneapolis area.
Up until the past few weeks I only knew of one or two other financial bloggers in the Minneapolis area. When Phil suggested that I start a FinCon Local group in the Twin Cities I wasn’t sure we’d have enough people to warrant a get together. After some research, however, I was surprised to find just how many bloggers we have in the area. It’s a growing community of personal finance and money saving enthusiasts!
We had our first meetup on Saturday November 17th in downtown Minneapolis at Key’s Restaurant at the Foshay. The Foshay Tower is the first skyscraper in Minneapolis, and was the tallest building in the city until 1972. It’s a cool, old historic building, and the restaurant turned out to be a good spot to meet.
After receiving 10-15 confirmations with yes or maybe answers to my meetup invitation, I realized that we actually have a pretty decent sized group of personal finance bloggers here in Minneapolis.
After confirming that we’d have a decent sized group I set out to find a good partner to work with us to sponsor our event.
A great new company that just launched at FinCon this year, Power Wallet, stepped up to the plate to sponsor our event, as well as several other local FinCon groups.
They paid for our food and drinks, and even sent us all some great T-shirt swag, so thanks go out to them for helping us out.
In case you’re not familiar with their product, Power Wallet is an online personal finance tool that helps you to keep track of all your accounts in one place, setup a family budget, and save money through coupons and deals. I’d definitely recommend checking them out if you get a chance.
Here are the nine bloggers that were able to attend our first gathering.
- Carrie and her husband Marco from Pocket Your Dollars
- Marybeth from Baby Savers
- Andi from Snowball in Hawaii
- Kraig from Young Cheap Living
- Aaron and his wife Jen from Three Thrifty Guys
- David from Young Adult Money
- Bible Money Matters – that’s me!
We had several other bloggers who were hoping to attend the event, but weren’t able to this time due to conflicts. So we expect an even bigger turnout next time!
We had a very diverse group of bloggers attending the meetup on Saturday. We had everything from frugality and coupon bloggers to student loan and general personal finance bloggers.
At least 2 of the bloggers in the group run their websites as their full time job, and had a lot of insights to share from that perspective. Carrie shared her experience of writing and launching her new book, while Marybeth talked about balancing her websites with raising her kids. Most of the rest of us have day jobs, and discussed how blogging quickly becomes a full time second job.
We had a great time chatting and agreed that we would be doing this again. We’ve tentatively decided to meet every other month, and our next meeting will likely be in January after the holidays. Stay tuned for more details on that.
